Welcome back to the December of Drinking playlist! I’m spinning all my favorite drinking songs, one each day through New Year’s Eve. We’re on Day 3, and since it’s the first holiday party weekend, I thought you could use a little hair of the dog. Today’s Spin is for all the folks who’d much rather sit home and drink it up, without all the hassles of people. And when it comes to the holidays, who couldn’t use a night off from the crowds?
George Thorogood – I Drink Alone
This is one of the most popular drinking songs on this list, and it’s one of my favorites. George Thorogood & The Delaware Destroyers were huge in the 80s, bringing a rock and roll update to blues standards. With his raunchy guitar and chainsmoker’s voice, George Thorogood was built for the blues. I first encountered him on MTV, with the video for “Bad To The Bone.” I figured if this guy could convince Bo Diddley to star in his video, he must be pretty cool. Of course, they played the hell outta that song on the radio, so it was kinda hard to miss him.
“I Drink Alone” comes from their follow-up album, Maverick. It got heavy airplay, and made it to Number 13 on the Billboard Rock Tracks chart. I think most of my peers learned the names of a variety of liquor brands directly from this song, long before we were of drinking age. When it comes to drinking songs, this one is in a class all by itself. Which is probably where it prefers to be.
Here’s George Thorogood & The Delaware Destroyers with “I Drink Alone.” Bottoms up!
