Welcome back to the December of Drinking set list! We’re on Day 5, and it’s time to crank it up a notch. Being that it’s a weekday, you might need an excuse to get a little drunk. Our next artist is more than happy to provide you with one. While he is more commonly associated with pot, he can certainly drink with the best of them, and write an awesome tune about it, too.

Willie Nelson – I Gotta Get Drunk

Willie Nelson is one of the most prolific musicians ever to come down the pike. The man has recorded 72 studio albums, 10 live albums, 37 compilations, and a couple of soundtracks. And that doesn’t include the 27 collaborations he participated in. Even if you haven’t heard him sing (which is doubtful), you’ve probably heard one of his songs covered by someone else.

Willie’s gift for songwriting established him in the music business. He wrote country classics like “Hello Walls,” “Pretty Paper,” and a little song titled “Crazy.” But Willie chafed at the slick production of the Nashville Sound, so he went back to his honky tonk roots and became a pioneer of outlaw country music. “I Gotta Get Drunk” comes from his 1970 release, Both Sides Now.

“I Gotta Get Drunk” is a perfect example of Nelson’s outlaw country style, and it’s one of his best drinking tunes. It’s a great song to sing along to, and it makes a great spin on the jukebox in a dive bar.

Liven up your Tuesday night with a little nip of Willie Nelson. “I Gotta Get Drunk” provides a lot of cover for drinking on a school night!

Cheers!
