Welcome back to the Halloween Countdown! We’ve hit the top 5 of my favorite creepy songs, and Today’s Spin comes from another unlikely source. Well, we all have a dark side, and Suzanne Vega is no exception. All about feeling crazed due to the blood rush to your brain from fear, this tune is a Halloween standby.
Number 5: Suzanne Vega – Blood Makes Noise
Suzanne Vega is best known for her folk-inspired acoustic songs, and she was one of my favorite artists in the 80s. I played the grooves off of her debut album in college. Then came the 90s, and she made a significant sound shift. 99.9F° found her bringing in electronic beats and a much funkier rhythm section. “Blood Makes Noise” features one of my favorite bass lines, and has a clanging beat that is a huge departure from the gentler sounds of her previous albums.
The album wasn’t a huge performer on the charts, but it did earn gold status by selling over half a million copies. “Blood Makes Noise” hit number 1 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart, one of the best chart placements of her career. I love this song, and have used it on multiple playlists over the years.
So, let’s getting a little blood grooving in our veins on a cold October day. Here’s Suzanne Vega with “Blood Makes Noise.” Enjoy!
