Number 19: Squirrel Nut Zippers – Hell
During the 90’s, I kinda got away from popular music and dug into jazz and blues, so I’m always at a bit of a loss when it comes to remembering bands or songs from that time. But then “Swingers” came out and there was a brief shining moment in the mid-90s when swing music made a big comeback and the retro cocktail culture became cool again. I loved that time. It brought a jazz sensibility into a garage band world, and injected a bit of fun back into the radio waves.
Squirrel Nut Zippers, with their catchy name and bouncy tunes, were a standout. This song, which first showed up on their album Hot in 1996, was probably their biggest hit, and it’s just the swinging-est tune about going to the Devil. Enjoy!
