Hello, and welcome to day 4 of the Today’s Spin: Halloween Countdown edition. I’m featuring the Top 20 of my favorite creepy tunes, and while many of the songs here will be off-the-beaten path, this one is not. Don’t care, I love it anyway.
Number 17: Donovan – Season Of The Witch
“Season Of The Witch” is one of the quintessential creepy songs. And while Donovan is best known for his more psychedelic musings on electrical bananas, etc., I’ve always loved the stripped down feeling of this song. It’s a perfect mood setter for a blustery October day when it gets dark by 6pm, and the trees have begun losing their leaves. It just feels chilling. So of course I had to include it here!
I elected to load the video of Donovan performing this on solo guitar, rather than just an album version. It’s just nice to see him perform. But I did discover that Jimmy Page (yes, that Jimmy Page) played the guitar on the original album version, back when he was working as a session musician. So here’s a link to the album version.
From 1966’s Sunshine Superman, here’s “Season Of The Witch.” Enjoy!
